DD's World
C and I had a chance to observe DD in his new class this week. We were excited to see him in action among all the older kids. In a Montessori classroom, the children usually work alone or in pairs on "work." They decide what they want to do as long as they've had a lesson on how to use the materials properly. They can do it over and over or they can move on to other work depending on how they feel. The teacher is their to give them lessons on how each material is used and then guides the child when they need help.
When we arrived, he was extremely excited and proud to have us see him in his environment. He immediately went for the world puzzle and worked on that a few times. He then worked on his insect cards, some animal cards, and then the color box. It amazing to see him in the Montessori classroom. He is neat and orderly. He knows where things belong. He concentrates for long periods of time.
About midway through our observation the Spanish teacher came to give a lesson to the kids who were interested. After finishing the color box and neatly putting the color tiles away, he came over to me and without hesitation said, "Go away." I actually thought he was going to be upset when we left. I was so wrong. After hugging him and as we were walking out, we saw him sit down next to the group of kids to partake in his Spanish lesson.
It's clear to me that although he just started his Primary education, he is enjoying it. It is his world.
