Zoo
We spent the morning of the holiday at the Zoo. It's about a 7 minute drive from our house or one metro stop away. The boys usually bypass all of the exotic creatures like the pandas and get excited over the farm animals at the Kids' Farm. This is mostly because you can get up and personal with them. DD stands patiently at the fence screaming for the donkeys and llamas to come over so he can pet them, not realizing that they fear him tremendously. A light rain started so we went home for lunch, but not before we picked up some animal crackers.
For those of you who live in the Washington DC area, you probably know that the Smithsonian is thinking about closing down the Kids' Farm for budgetary reasons. I know that many parents in the area have organized a "pet-in" to protest. But really I find this to be lacking. The National Zoo, as well as all Smithsonian museums (save for the Cooper Hewitt), are FREE. It costs the Zoo approximately $250,000 a year to operate the Kids' Farm. If this is important to your family, consider bringing out your checkbook in order to save the Farm.
