Sewers and Other Underground Things
For the last year, the boys have been curious about all things underground. Recently, their fascination turned to sewers and what's down there and why. BB likes to look in manholes to check out the ladder, then ask if he can climb down. No. Beyond sewers, they love to learn about animals that burrow underground. At the National Zoo, there is a play structure near the praire dog exhibit that is supposed to simulate the underground tunnels these animals make themselves. This is their favorite thing to visit at the Zoo.
Last year I found a wonderful book (Over and Under the Snow by Kate Messner) that captured their curiousity for all of winter. I'm breaking it out again now that December is upon us. Their renewed interest in all things underground seems befitting of the season. Now is the time to wear new warm coats and gloves, sip hot things, and get cozy at home.
