Volcanoes National Park, Part II - Crater Rim Drive + Chain of Craters Road
It's been a while since I wrote about Hawaii. I haven't looked at our photos in a long time; I can't bare it! But I want to finish writing about all that we saw and did so here you go.
Where did we leave off on Volcanoes National Park? We had just finished the Kilauea Iki Trail and took a break before heading to Crater Rim Drive and Chain of Craters Road. This is the part of our trip where I can't believe I don't have more photos. The scenic drive is incredible looking both ahead down the mountain towards the ocean, and back up. But I have very few photos of it. Descending down Crater Rim Drive, you see the vast amounts of black molten lava that made its way to the ocean. In fact, the entire Crater Rim Drive was covered in lava and had to be scraped and cleared in 2014!
The scenic drives takes you through craters and endless lava fields. The road ends when the land ends and falls into the ocean. There were still things we hadn't had time to see but it was time to pack it in and make the drive back home. Truly an unforgettable day.
In case you were wondering, that's C standing on the arch!
