Columbus Day

Columbus Day has become a bit awkward for us since moving to our current school.  For the first time in years, both C and I have the day off but the kids do not.  However, it is Open House day at the school so we spend the morning observing the boys in their classrooms.  It's always such an eye-opening experience seeing your kids in class, watching them participating and performing along with their peers.  Sometimes it can be a bit stressful seeing how much is going on in the classroom that all the growing brains have to absorb.  It can be chaos.

We did steal away to spend some time alone.  Perhaps it was a bit indulgent but it was C's birthday the day before - we drove all the way to H Street NE to have a bowl of our favorite ramen.  We also took a walk down a few blocks to go to grab a coffee at the hippest cafe in town.  On the way back, we stopped into Crate & Barrel to pick up a few home items and to check out a table and chairs set before heading home to pick up the kids.  For the most part, they were oblivious to the fact that we didn't go to work except to ask why we were both at the bus stop.
