The Lakehouse, Part 5
Of all the days we were in Maine, there was only one cloudy day. We took the opportunity to visit Bass Harbor Head Light, located at the southern most tip of Mount Desert Island. If you visit, I recommend a visit on a foggy, drizzly day. Through the forest is a soft, mossy trail which makes you feel as though you're in a rainforest. Eventually you come upon a steep descending wooden staircase down to the rocks and the sea. Scramble to the edge of the rocks and look back up for a stunning view of the head light.
On this gray day, the most exciting thing happened. The boys looked through the dense and silent fog and spotted a black animal with a long neck in the water. They were sure it was "Nessie" (a.k.a. Loch Ness). The excitement continued throughout the day. If you look closely at one of the photos above of the ocean, you can see it. I didn't enlarge the photo for you because this is how we experienced it from the land.
From Bass Harbor we made our way to the little village of Southwest Harbor. We had lunch and shopped the few boutiques before meandering home on the scenic route.
