Reading

On our Summer List is reading.  When decorating each of the rooms in our house, I wanted to make lots of comfortable places for curling up with a good book.  Initially, the study/office was going to the be singular place the boys did their homework and read, but sometimes homework requires splitting them up so having different areas in the house conducive to quiet reading is a good idea for us.

Right now, BB and DD each have a couple of books going - some easy, fun reads, while others require more concentration.  Here is what they're recommending to their fellow young readers:
*BB just started The Saturdays (The Melendy Quartet) by Elizabeth Enright.  So far so good.  I usually try to select books with vastly different themes and settings but stay away from bad language and too much violence.
*He just finished Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH by Robert C. O'Brien, which he seemed to enjoy.  Before that he was reading The Phantom Tollbooth, The Indian in the Cupboard, and The One and Only Ivan.  He really seemed to enjoy these books.
*On the side, BB also reads what I call "lazy books" - he likes comics and things like Minecraft chapter books.
*DD is finishing book 9 of the Heroes in Training series by Joan Holub.  He really ripped through these after developing a keen interest in Greek mythology.  We might move on to Rick Riordan this Summer.
*Like all kids, DD also enjoys The Magic Treehouse series.  His interest piqued after listening to one in the car.  Now we just take him to the bookstore where he picks out the books that he's interested in. Sometimes he can read one a day.  On a friend's recommendation, I'm going to start him on A to Z Mysteries and Capital Mysteries as well.
*DD also likes to chill at night reading his old Dr. Seuss books and trying to read the tongue twister-like pages super fast.
*Over the weekend, our Humphrey Box Set arrived!  These are chapter books both BB and DD can enjoy.
