The Lakehouse, Part 6
After the day of fog, the sun came right back out the next day. We looked on the map and made what turned out to be one of the best decisions of our trip - to drive out to Winter Harbor and the Schoodic Peninsula. We liked it so much that C declared he'd like to buy some property here.
There is a scenic drive along the coast that you can, and should, take. We stopped along the way, whenever we saw something we wanted to see. We climbed, dipped toes into the water, found shells, and hurled stones. Unknown to many, the southern part of the peninsula is part of Acadia National Park. Afterwards, we hit up the Schoodic Research and Education Center.
Later that day we had reservations for a horse drawn carriage ride over the old carriage roads back on Mount Desert Island. I'll spare you the details of our poor planning but we made it in time for our reservation. The ride itself was very relaxing, if not a bit boring for the kids. We learned a lot about the history of the carriage roads and the Rockefeller family. Right before the end, however, our horses got spooked and we had to dismount. There were a couple of tense moments but it made our ride all the more interesting to the boys.
That day was one of our best of the entire trip!
