Day Trip to Hatteras

Even though we stay in Corolla, I really like to take the boys down to Hatteras at least once during the week. It's a long drive so logistically it's tricky with young kids but we do have a fantastic time on every visit.  When we last visited in May, I noted a couple of points we wanted to visit along the Hatteras seashore.  This time we stopped at the same sandwich place to pick up a picnic lunch and headed down for the long drive.  One of the points along the Pimlico Sound was difficult to get to, but no problem for the boys.  DD and I spent most of the time wading in the warm water spying on schools of fish and crabs.  BB preferred the large boulders and he climbed the entirety of them on his own.

We headed further south to visit the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse.  Last time we stopped at the Bodie Lighthouse which is well north of Hatteras.  Did you know the Hatteras Lighthouse is the tallest in the U.S.?  DD was too little to climb it this year, but BB really wanted to and climbed it all without taking a break.

Before heading back, we took a side trip to a walk on a fishing pier. We picked the Avon Pier for it's incredible views.  Not only is it full of character, but the surf looked incredible and it looks like our next vacation to the Outer Banks will include a day enjoying the Buxton beach.  This was our favorite kind of day - free range and mostly unscheduled with lots of natural views to enjoy.
