Spring Break 2019:: London, Part I

In a last minute move, we booked a family trip to London for spring break.  C and I spent a lot of time in London while we were dating, and we've always wanted to return with the kids.  My biggest concern when traveling far is the first day. We landed early, hailed a traditional Black Cab, and made our long journey into the heart of London.

What I like to do when traveling for longer periods of time is to rent very stylish flat in the middle of it all - right near the British Museum and near Leicester Square. After dropping our luggage we had a great lunch at a nearby restaurant. The food seemed to restore everyone from the long flight and we set out to explore. The boys were champs despite the jet lag. Because our neighborhood was chock full of restaurants, we went to 3 different restaurants picking up everyone's dinner and eating back at the apartment.

As I mentioned, our flat was a 2 minute stroll to the British Museum so we decided to visit on day 2 of our trip, staying close to home base in case jetlag struck.  The British Museum is big and can easily take hours or a repeat visit to see everything.  But we decided to just see the collections we were all most interested in which included the China collection, mummies, weapons and armor.

The museum cafes were really crowded so we ventured to a nearby restaurant for lunch and then we went exploring.  We ended up shopping while we explored hitting everything between Leicester Square and Mayfair.  There are so many restaurants, cafes, and boutiques its overwhelming.
The sun was out and the boys still had energy so we kept exploring all the way down to Trafalgar Square.  BB and DD ran around and soaked in the sun while C and I had a coffee.  On the way back we shopped Jermyn Street where all 3 of my men found many things to buy.  We also made a stop at my favorite, Fortnum & Mason for tins of biscuits for ourselves and as gifts.

After a few more shops along the way, we headed home for a nice long rest.  In the evening we went out for Korean BBQ at Superstar, just a 5 minute walk for us.  We had to wait a bit before a table was available but the boys played in the courtyard and had a good time.  Superstar offers grilling kalbi at your table so DD  was in charge of grilling while BB ate.  C and I split a ginseng chicken soup which was huge, warm, and delicious.  In fact, one of the things that I warned everyone about was that the food in London was only so-so.  That certainly had been our experience the many times we had visited London over a decade ago.  But we had really delicious food on this trip - amazing!
