Visiting the Shenandoahs in the Fall

Somehow we've let two years go by without making a trip back to Shenandoah National Park.  I have intentions every year to go during the Fall to enjoy the turning leaves but haven't pulled it off.  Like much of life, it's better to do things on a whim sometimes, so that's how we finally ended up making it to Skyline Drive this year.  It's still a few weeks before the Shenandoah leaves are at their peak color but by that time, the crowds will make it unpleasant.  We fought our fair share of traffic this past weekend but ended up having a great time.  We drove about half of Skyline Drive, enjoyed many of the overlooks, and even took a short hike on one of the trails until dusk.

This is what I prefer to do with the boys on a lovely Fall weekend.  This over a crowded Fall festival at one of the large and overpriced farms.  Maybe I'm wrong and BB and DD would prefer that type of thing but watching them run up and down the hill chasing "soot sprites" (from their favorite Miyazaki film) is pretty damn awesome.
