Birthday Weekend in NYC - Part 2

With birthday parties behind us, I'm going back to sharing the rest of our NYC trip.  On Sunday we slept in, had breakfast near our hotel and then started walking and enjoying the incredible spring weather in NYC.  We found ourselves at Columbus Circle where we stopped to play in the fountains and I realized we were at the new Amazon bookstore.  If you have the chance, I would recommend a walk through, especially if you are a Prime member.  We are and you get Prime prices on everything in the store.  The book selection is good and BB and DD found several things they wanted to get.  I hear they are opening at least one store in the DC area soon.

On a side note, the Barnes & Noble nearest to us will be closing at the end of this year when it's lease expires.  I don'not know the details - their lease ends and I'm assuming that business is down - but it leaves us so sad. We often will make a run to that B&N on a week night just to take a walk and let the boys shop for books.  Kids still want and need to shop books physically, look at the cover art, leaf through the first several pages.  Hell, I like to do it too.  Even though 70% of our book reading is now e-books, BB and DD always find books they want to buy.  I'm hoping that Amazon considers opening a smaller bookstore in the B&N space.

With our new books in tow, we headed over to The Whitney.  The new space is really great - tall ceilings and big windows make for the volume you need to enjoy the big art they had.  The boys like looking at strange contemporary art and they loved all the outdoor terrace space.  From there it was a hunt for lunch.  We lucked out and found a wonderful little Italian restaurant in the West Village called Malaparte.  Food was great and the wait staff was even better.
Afterwards, we split up - C took the boys back to the hotel for a little down time and then to the Ripley's Museum, while I met up with my brother for some cafe hopping and shopping.  We met back up again for dinner and then it was my turn for some downtime with the boys while C went out with a friend for drinks.
It was another fantastic day in NYC even though we played everything by ear.  In fact, we had originally planned to take the kids to see a show because it was supposed to rain on Sunday but the weather was gorgeous and I just couldn't stand missing out and being indoors that entire time.  We'll save Lion King for next time.
