Middle Miocene at Calvert Cliffs

The weather was unstable last week during the bulk of our Spring Break.  At the first sign of sun, we took the boys to Calvert Cliffs State Park, about a 1.5 hour drive from D.C.  Calvert Cliffs is known for its fossils dating back to the Middle Miocene Age.  Tons of folks go to the beach at the base of the cliffs to dig for prehistoric bones and shark teeth every day.  I was a little worried about the almost 4-mile hike we would have to make to get to the beach and back but the boys made it on their own with little difficulty.

The trail we took was fun for them but the beach and the cliffs were the big pay off.  Neither BB nor DD were much interested in digging for fossils, preferring to play in the water and the tidal pool that had formed.  We were there for hours before making our long way back home.  While there, I made mental progress on vacations plans this summer, a trip to visit a place with both rocky and sandy beaches.
